STAX HISTORY PART 4

Stax SR-Sigma and SR-4070 SR-Sigma STAX HISTORY PART 4 introduction It would be possible to write a substantial amount about Stax and the Sigma series alone. This intriguing series warrants its own section in my story, but I won’t go into too much detail. After four years of development and extensive trial and error, Stax…

The second installment of Stax's SR-Lambda series, focusing on the later versions, is here. Despite the fact that the SR-507 was left out of the first portion, I still think it's a model that's more in line with the recent ones; it uses the same driver as the SR-407 Signature, but it's tuned differently. This represents a change from the previous models' sound signature to what may be referred to as a "V" signature.

Part of what makes the early SR-Lambdas represent Stax's "Old School" sound concept is this. Beginning with the SR-202 Basic, the "newer" versions feature a little more "V"-shaped tuning than its predecessors. The 1987 SR-Lambda Signature is one of my favorite cars. Additionally, the SR-404 Limited and SR-404 Signature are top-notch variants. The Stax SR-507 was purposefully left out since it serves as a precursor to the more recent models in Stax's Lambda series, which will be discussed in part 6.

In a nutshell, the tuning is open and airy while leaning somewhat toward the bright side; mid-range sounds sound less forward or forceful due to the typical Hifiman drop at roughly 1-3 kHz. The layering and separation are superb. Highly versatile, able to play a variety of musical styles. One notable feature for the price range of about US$500 is the excellent bass extension.
